Our D Class Inshore Lifeboat “Helen & Ian Tytler" has now been re-housed in the boathouse after being temporarily moored afloat within the marina for three weeks. This was due to extreme amounts of debris which became trapped in and around our launch site following the heavy rainfall during the weekend 16/17th July.

Our Atlantic 85 Inshore Lifeboat “Wolseley” has now been re-housed in the boathouse after being temporarily moored afloat within the marina for two weeks. This was due to extreme amounts of debris which became trapped in and around our launch site following the heavy rainfall during the weekend 16/17th July. The D Class will remain afloat (and fully operational) on a marina mooring until the final phase of clearance work has been completed.

Volunteers based at Sunderland’s RNLI Lifeboat Station were last night presented with a donation from local community groups which will be used to keep the lifeboat volunteers training up to scratch.
The £500 donation was made by members of Southwick Community Centre and a dance group from Hylton Castle Club. Included in the donation was a thirty five pound contribution made by Southwick Community Centre member Mary Burton; who received the money at her recent Golden Wedding Anniversary party. (more)

Sunderland-based Coastguard Rescue Officer (CRO) Mike Cowe and Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) colleagues, Ron Carroll and Ian Rowan, will each receive the Society’s Resuscitation Certificate for reviving Charles William Nelson, 44, of Roker Avenue, after the dramatic rescue in Sunderland Harbour. RNLI crews who battled in vain to save a teenager who drowned off Hendon Beach have been given a special donation from his friends and family. Mark Langton was swept to his death by a 15ft wave as he played with pals on the first day of the Easter holidays, two years ago. (more)

Our new RNLI lifeboat was officially named at a special ceremony last Saturday [8th September] by a representative of the company which funded her. We were only the second lifeboat station in the north of England to receive an Atlantic 85 class lifeboat, which is one of the lifesaving charity's most technologically advanced vessels. (full story)
